These archaeological ruins are an important site to visit if you are interested in Buddhism. While the temples and monasteries are ruins, you get an idea of the layout. The stupa itself is huge but…Full review by EC13091

Building on answer above, yes, you can ask at the entrance, but make sure you negotiate price ahead of time. Use your gut if fair or not. If it was me, I'd probably ask at the desk or concierge at your hotel for a solid reference. Should not cost too much and can also include trip in a van or car with the guide who can show you things on the way to Sarnath and back. Also, if you do the latter suggestion, be careful if your guide offers to take you to precise stores to shop. No matter what he/she says, they might be getting a cut of the action and not really taking you to the best store.
I want to get a half day tour from Varanasi to Sarnath. Would be obliged if anyone can tell me what local taxis would be charging.

If you are planning just Sarnath you can catch an Ola taxi. Much cheaper and no need for parking fees. There is also an option of asking the hotel chaps for a guided tour option
Would anyone like to recommend a particular company for a half day tour of Sarnath with not too many people?
