The hi-speed trains from/to Kunming are the fastest way. There's a shuttle bus from the Shilin high-speed station. the only downer is that some of the high-speed trains use the Kunming Main station, which is nightmare.

Hi, You should realize that the stone forest will practically eat the most of your day, that is if you are fit and move around easily, ie you navigate well, and in general manage to do things swiftly. In terms of Kunming, if you've been following the news recently, it wasn't all rosy. I would stick with the stone forest. Good luck.
