Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student the Trump administration is trying to expel from the U.S. because of his role in campus protests against Israel, are expected to appear Friday before a judge in New Jersey as they fight for his release from federal custody.

Lawyers for the Justice Department and detained Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil are due in Newark federal court on Friday to argue over where his petition for release should be held.

During Thursday morning’s hearing, the federal government is expected to expand on its newest accusations against Mahmoud Khalil.
