The company says it has solved the first problem of scientific relevance with a quantum processor faster than could be done with classical computers—but others disagree

D-Wave Quantum Inc. said today a peer-reviewed scientific paper proves it has finally passed a critical threshold and achieved “quantum supremacy” — that is, the point at which its quantum computers have finally solved a problem that’s impossible for even the most powerful “classical” computers to do.

D-Wave is the latest quantum computing company to say it has achieved “quantum supremacy,” better known as the ability to solve a problem with a quantum computer that can’t be done with a traditional computer.
