Braves Franchise History 1974 - Hank Aaron passes Babe Ruth with his 715th home run off of Dodgers’ pitcher Al Downing at Fulton County Stadium. The game is delayed due to the celebration. Aaron will finish his career with 755 home runs.

“Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron had finished the 1973 season just one shy of Ruth. He tied Ruth on Opening Day in Cincinnati. And when the Braves returned for their first home game of the season on April 8, 1974, a sellout crowd of 53,775 anxiously waited to watch history unfold.

An exhibit at the Atlanta History Center called “More than Brave: The Life of Henry Aaron,” tells the story of Aaron’s career, his personal life, his challenges and his impact in Atlanta and the rest of the world.
