The Metropolitan Transit Authority has unveiled the first major change to the famed New York City subway map since 1979. The historic map commuters are used to seeing on subway cars and in stations across the five boroughs will be phased out in the coming weeks and replaced with the new version.

The MTA on Wednesday unveiled a new “easily readable” New York City subway map for the first time in nearly 50 years – but straphangers knocked the redesigned graphic as a “complicated” brain teaser that impedes their ability to navigate the underground rail system.

The Department of Records and Information Services just upgraded its pretty awesome interactive map, allowing you to look through all the co-named streets, read the biographies of the folks that they are named after and learn details about the year that the renaming was enacted.
