The much-anticipated Nebraska vs. Tennessee football home-and-home series planned for 2026 and 2027 is off the schedule and not likely to return.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Friday morning that the Tennessee Volunteers and Nebraska Cornhuskers are canceling their upcoming football home-and-home series for 2026 and '27, citing Nebraska "wanting eight home games in 2027 when they expect reduced stadium capacity because of renovations."

Tennessee will no longer play Nebraska in a home-and-home series that’s been on the books for 19 years because Nebraska is buying out the contract.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen has canceled nonconference games against Tennessee in 2026 and 2027 as part of a plan to recoup lost revenue from reduced seating capacity during major renovations of Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska leads the all time football series against Tennessee, 2-1, dating to Jan. 2, 1998. The Vols defeated Nebraska, 38-24, in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee. Tennessee's scheduled nonconference opponents in 2026 are Furman and Western Michigan in 2027.

Danny White, Tennessee's athletic director, said the university is "very disappointed" Nebraska didn't want to play those two scheduled games.
